I wish I had more working brain cells and energy to reply to all these wonderful letters. I have so much to say about most of them but can’t get my thoughts in order easily at the moment due to either pain or the fug of pain-relief.

I loved your job application template! Well done to Jules for unearthing it.

It’s funny how we can completely forget what we’ve written and assume someone else must have done. I’ve done that too. It always lifts my spirit a bit because, for a short while, I’m reading it as objectively as someone who didn’t write it and therefore the monkey voice isn’t criticising it all. I can actually take it in without a filter that proclaims it must be crap because I wrote it. Which ties in neatly with the judgement half of your Love Letter...

I was heartened to discover this weekend that my favourite living composer, Eric Whitacre, is an ardent fan of morning pages so that he can compose without getting caught up in the judgement spiral. It made me feel less of an imposter to know that 30 years of unusual success in the modern classical music business has done little to convince him he’s good enough even though he comes across as a confident and highly intelligent guy with an enviable record. He felt like a kindred spirit. I bet he hates dirty toenails, too.

I'm sorry you're feeling so horrible. It sounds bad!

Yes, isn't it funny when we can read something as though we didn't write it? It's such a fleeting moment of seeing ourselves objectively.

I will have to check out Eric Whitacre.

Have you ever tried writing first thing in the morning, before you do anything else? Coming to the page with nothing in your brain? I have a trick for getting this going, if you ever want to know how.

I’ve been trying to get going with morning pages again first thing but it’s difficult while I’m staying with my mum. I was doing fairly well before my back issues started so hopefully when I go home it will be possible to get back into it but I’d love your tips on how to get it going because I do find it difficult sometimes.
